Hailie Evans
A Beam of Life
A beam of life grazing
crystal after crystal
refracting repeatedly, rebounding
off impenetrable walls, its
ray altering after each crystalline
contact, a slight nuance shaping its shine.
Each sleek surface illuminates an
image of what that light might
be, but it never falls in love with
one reflection and no ripples mark its blow.
I shatter against each crystal, growing
smaller, spinning, less clear than before—
I hope some colors take form.
Hailie Evans is a 2025 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior and a current J.D. candidate at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. Creative writing is her passion, and Hailie finds inspiration for her work in analyzing people, literary characters, relationships, and the world around her. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, listening to a rollercoaster range of music, and working on her in-progress speculative fiction novel. Her work has previously appeared in The Nemadji Review.
