The Nemadji Review accepts all genres for consideration, including academic papers, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and visual art from students, faculty, community members, and alumni of the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The goal of our yearly print publication, and regular website features, is to enrich and engage our literary community. The theme for the 15th Edition of The Nemadji Review is “Through the Crystalline Lens.” Change and transformation are woven into the fabric of life. This year, we invite you to consider that fact through a crystal lens. This could be a single moment, a specific experience that creates a changed perspective. Or, it could be the culmination of life events that result in a refraction of self, much like white light alters and transforms into exquisite rainbows when it shines through a crystal. Alternatively, you may consider the anatomical definition of the phrase “crystalline lens,” which “is the last membrane that light passes through before reaching your retina,” giving your eye a “chance to fine-tune your focus” (Cleveland Clinic). As you consider the theme, you might create a piece based on how we all pass through experiences changed. You can view it as a chance to focus on what guides you or reflect on the unlimited outcomes through one question: You are the light, forever changed by the prism. What is the prism, and what have you become?
